لقاء مفوض العون الإنساني المكلف بوكيل الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة للشؤون الإنسانية.pdf

Office of the Commissioner General Saturday, 23 November 2024

Mrs. Mona Nour Al-Daim Omar, Acting Commissioner General for Humanitarian Aid, met in her office with Mr. Tom Fletcher, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, and his delegation, accompanied by the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, at the beginning of his visit to assess the humanitarian situation. The meeting discussed key issues and concerns of the Sudanese government regarding the humanitarian file, including topics such as protecting civilians in areas controlled by the rebel militias, violations of their rights to food, healthcare, water, and freedom of movement. The discussion also addressed the facilitation measures granted to the United Nations and its partners, including entry visas, movement permits for personnel, vehicles, and humanitarian aid, as well as necessary customs exemptions. Additionally, they reviewed the government's efforts to open humanitarian corridors, including the extension of the opening of the Adré border crossing despite security challenges and its misuse by militias to smuggle weapons, exacerbating the suffering of Sudanese citizens. Mrs. Mona highlighted that donor funding for 2024 falls short of expectations, despite Sudan currently experiencing one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. Therefore, the Sudanese government aspires for the 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan to receive sufficient funding to implement projects and interventions that alleviate the dire conditions faced by affected populations and displaced persons. Mr. Fletcher expressed his pleasure in visiting Sudan to gain a field-level understanding of the situation and to hear firsthand from affected individuals and displaced communities, noting that this is his first visit to Sudan since assuming his new position. He affirmed his commitment to working and collaborating with the Sudanese government to increase funding for the 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan. He also thanked the Sudanese government for facilitating his visit and streamlining humanitarian work procedures for partners, expressing hope for further collaboration and coordination. In her closing remarks, the Acting Commissioner General emphasized the need for the international community to issue a clear condemnation of the atrocities committed by the rebel Rapid Support Forces militia. Such condemnation would contribute to deterring these militias and halting their violations.
